In this Photoshop tutorial, I will show you how to create Awesome 3D Illusion Effect with simple basic steps.
Photoshop CS4 or higher
To start off open Photoshop. Now go to File>New to create a new document (Ctrl+N) and set the dimension and resolution values as below:
Width: 1920 px, Height: 1080 px, Resolution: 300 Pixels/Inch
Set the Color Mode as RGB and click OK.
Now go to File>Place and select a picture of mobile phone and click Place. You can download pictures from any open source like any Free Stock Photo Websites. Now scale the image to fit in your document and hit Enter.
Now select Pen tool (P) and draw a section around the screen of the mobile phone and then right click and select Make Selection. Make sure Father Radius value is “0” and click OK.
Now create a new blank layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and apply White color to it by pressing Alt+Del (make sure foreground color set as White) and then deselect the selection by pressing Ctrl+D.
Now select the white layer and make a duplicate layer of it (Ctrl+J) and rename the duplicate layer as “Shadow”. Now right click on the “Shadow” layer and click Blending Options and apply “Inner Shadow” and set the values as below:
Distance: 6 px, Coke: 0 px and Size:16 px
(You can set any other value which goes better with your picture)
And then press OK.
Now make the Fill Opacity of the “Shadow” layer as “0”.
Now select the Pen tool once again and draw a section around the hand (or any other object present in the image you are working with) and then right click and click Make Selection. Make sure Father Radius value is “1” and click OK. Now make sure that the original mobile image layer is selected and press Ctrl+C and then press Ctrl+V to make a copy of the hand to a new layer. Now rename the new layer as “Hand” and by simply dragging place this layer on top of all the layers.
Now go to File>Place and select the other image, which you want to replace with the screen of the mobile (something like a sky with a road as shown below will be preferred).
Now reduce the opacity of the image so that you can see the mobile image through it and place the image in such a way that each side of the road should touch bottom two corner of the mobile screen as shown in the picture below and then make the opacity of the layer back to 100%.
Now place this image layer below the shadow layer and on top of the white screen layer as shown on the image below. Now right click on this image layer and select Create Clipping Mask.
Next step, make a duplicate layer of the sky/road image (Ctrl+J) and rename the duplicate layer as “Road”. Now select the Pen tool (P) and draw a selection around the road as shown in the image below:
Once the section is done then right click and select Make Selection. Make sure Father Radius value is “1” and click OK. Now make sure the “road” layer is selected and apply Layer Mask to it from the bottom of the Layer panel.
Now you can see it looks like the road is coming out from the screen of the mobile phone.
Now go to File> Open and select a picture something like a girl sitting or something you like to place on your image or which you think will fit better with your project.
Now once again select Pen tool (P) and draw a selection around the girl and then right click and select Make Selection. Make sure Father Radius value is “1” and click OK. Now go to Select>Refine Edge, set the radius value and brush size as per your requirement and draw surrounding the head of the girl to include the hairs inside the selection so that the edge of the head looks better.
Well you can avoid this step (depending on the image you choose). Now set the following values:
Smooth: 1 and Feather: 1px, and set the Output To as “New Layer” and click OK.
Now take the selection to the original document by dragging it with Move tool (V) or you can use any other method you like. Now scale the image with the help of Free Transform option (Ctrl+T) and place it on the road in such a way so that it looks like, that the girl is sitting on the road and rename this layer as “Girl”. You can refer to the image below:
Now let’s create some light on the “Girl”. Let’s create a duplicate layer of the “Girl” (Ctrl+J) and rename it as “Girl Shadow”. Now right click on the layer thumbnail of this layer and click “Select Pixels” and fill the selection with Black color, using Paint Bucket Tool (G), make sure foreground color is Black. Now press Ctrl+D to deselect the selection and set the opacity as 55%.
Now select the soft Eraser tool (E) and roughly erase the “girl shadow” layer from one side, so that it looks like one side is dark and one side is bright as shown in the image below:
Now create a New layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) below the “Girl” layer and draw some black color on it, around the bottom part of the girl with the help of soft Brush tool (B) and reduce the opacity of this layer as per your requirement adjust it in such a way so that it looks like a shadow of the girl on the road. You can refer to the image below:
Now go to File>Place and import one or two image of tree (.png preferred) to the document. If the tree image is not a .png file like mine, then change the Blend Mode to Darken (if the background is white) or change the Blending Mode to Screen (if the background is black). Now scale the tree image as per your requirement with the help of transformation tool.
Make sure the tree layer place under the Road mask layer and apply Clipping Mask to it, so that the tree can see only through the screen of the mobile phone. You can refer to the below image:
Make sure to un-hide the “Hand layer”.
Now let’s do some color adjustment. Click on the Adjustment button icon from the bottom of the layer panel and click Brightness/Contrast and set the following values (appx.):
Brightness: -17 and Contrast: 60
(You can set any other value which goes better with your picture)
Now again click on the Adjustment button icon from the bottom of the layer panel and click Curve and adjust it (just to give a darkish effect), something like shown in the image below:
Now create a New Blank Layer (Sift+Ctrl+N) and draw black color with the help of soft Brush tool (B) surround the layer as shown on the image below:
Now reduce the Opacity value of this layer to 35% (appx).
Now create a New Blank Layer (Sift+Ctrl+N) and apply Black color to it by pressing Alt+Del (make sure foreground color set as Black). Now go to Filter>Render>Lens Flare and set the following value:
Brightness: 90% (appx.) and Lens Type: 105mm Prime and place the flair in the center and then click Ok.
Now scale and place it as per your requirement with the help of Free Transformation tool (Ctrl+T) and set the Blending Mode of this layer to “Screen” so that the Black color of the layer will blend and only the Flair will be visible. Now place the lens layer below the Road mask layer layers.
Now select the Lens layer and hit (Ctrl+U) to apply Hue/Saturation and value as per your requirement to give a color to the “flair” and click Ok.
Awesome, here you go. Now you have the result just the way you wanted. Isn’t it an Awesome 3D Illusion Effect.
